Understanding NEMA Enclosures & Environmental Protection

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) defines a set of ratings that classify the degree of protection enclosures provide to electrical equipment. These NEMA ratings indicate how well an electrical enclosure shields internal components from environmental hazards like dust, water, and corrosive chemicals. 

For example: 

• NEMA 3R offers protection against falling dirt, rain, sleet, and ice formation, making it suitable for many outdoor uses. 
• NEMA 12 is designed for indoor use and defends against dust, falling dirt, and dripping non-corrosive liquids.
